May The “Fish” Be With You.

May The “Fish” Be With You.

The fish holds a special place in our life. It’s not just food but also a symbol for desired values and aspirations.

To the Chinese, it represents deep meaning and significance. Phonetically, it sounds like another word, abundance (余).

As a race that has undergone thousands of years of “the sweet, sour, bitter, and spicy” (甜酸苦辣) dimensions of life, we long for prosperity and abundance.

That’s why there is a Chinese saying, “如鱼得水.”

Loosely translated, it describes our hope to be like that of a fish that has found its place and fulfillment in water.

In other words, we desire to be happy and have good fortune and freedom in our work and other areas of our life.

The fish is also a symbol of fertility and productivity. This is so probably because of its ability to spawn fast and in volume.

It speaks of a key aspiration of all humans, including entrepreneurs.

We want to live without having to worry about meeting our needs and wants, and to also achieve more and better results.

The fish is therefore a popular theme of artists in paintings, sculptures, and other works of art.

There is a demand for such artifacts in many homes and offices.

Interestingly, many Christians have also adopted the fish to represent our beliefs and values.

We have a passionate drive to be “fishers of men.”

It is a high calling to engage and influence humanity so as to help them return to our Creator and in doing so, to do good and live well.

The fish is also a symbol that speaks to Christians about faith and abundance.

The Bible records a story about how our Creator multiplied fishes and loaves to the amazement of the masses. That was a stroke of divine brilliance.

It affirms that He who is the Source of all opportunities and possibilities can bless humans, and meet their needs beyond their wildest imagination.

In another incident, He challenged a group of fishermen to let down their net for what would become a major spiritual catch of a lifetime.

In essence, it was a lifelong lesson that one has to step out and exercise faith to find eternal fulfillment and success.

In ancient Norse and European culture, the fish represents single mindedness, persistence, and resilience.

Their people must have probably been impressed with the ability, determination, and adaptability of the fish to survive in the wild.

In particular, the salmon is known to even swim upstream and against the current to reach the spawning ground.

In many other cultures, the fish is also a symbol for life, knowledge, wisdom, creativity, inspiration, and transformation.

In conclusion, may the profound meanings, values, and significance that the fish represents be a part of your life forever.

How Rich Are You?

How Rich Are You?

I have realized that the greatest poverty is a poverty of dreams.

When there is nothing to look forward to, and nothing to live and fight for, life is likened to a feather that’s carried by the aimless winds of life.

There is nothing more tragic than to live without a sense of meaning, purpose and significance.

However, when you hold on with determination to a high calling, you can tap on the infinite wealth that our Creator has prepared for you.

He has opened for you a personal checking account with unlimited resources that you can draw upon to fulfill His worthwhile causes.

Poverty of character and values is another one of the worst diseases that plagues different parts of society.

Ultimately, people will see beyond the glitter and glamour and right through to your heart.

It is not what you have but how you gave what you have, and not the quantity of your possessions but the quality of your contributions that determine true wealth.

Furthermore, there is no quality that defines poverty as much as a poverty of humility.

When you think you are bigger than what you really are or worse, when you think you are better than the others, you push yourself over the cliff of true wealth and into the dark abyss of life.

On the way down, there are no helping hands because you could have unwittingly rejected them.

Even if there are people there to help you, the lack of humility will continue to prevent you from breaking the fall and climbing back to your rightful place.

Ultimately, poverty becomes permanent when there is a poverty of the right action.

When you do not take the right action and enough of the right action, you will never improve your lot in life.

Somehow, you will find yourself going round and round in circles and even regressing in life.

You may never escape the clutches of poverty.

Break the vicious cycle and put yourself on the path to sustainable wealth.

When you examine the overall scheme of life, you may realize that your perception of poverty is narrow and incomplete.

Perhaps, there’s a need to re-evaluate your belief of wealth so that you can live a purposeful, exciting and fulfilling life.

In doing so, you may learn to live a full life and live life at its best.

Is Your Career A Platform Or A Pitfall Of Success?

Is Your Career A Platform Or A Pitfall Of Success?

On the journey of life, other than sleeping, you will spend more time developing your career than on any other preoccupation.

It is sad that for many, instead of treating their career as a calling, they see it as just a way to earn an income or to climb a ladder in search of promotion and personal achievement.

Many go to work and never seek to love their job and excel in it.

They choose to drift through time.

While their bodies are at the workplaces, their minds can be somewhere else.

They dream of greener pastures and look out for a better employer.

All these while, they did not realize that the best workplace is what they made out of it.

Slowly but surely, they are draining their energy away, and wasting their life.

They fail to see the meaning, purpose and significance of their jobs and careers.

And realise how much good they can achieve for their loved ones, colleagues, customers, community, and countries by putting their hearts and souls to their careers.

So, is your career a platform or a pitfall of success?

Life is FUNtastic!

Beware of Facebook.

Beware of Facebook.

Facebook has an unbelievable power to engage you over a protracted period of time.

It can sometimes make you scroll mindlessly and meaninglessly through post after post, and click “Like” after “Like” on a growing number of its pages.

(Please don’t leave my Love Note now.) 🙂

Over time, Facebook can influence you far more than you can ever know or imagine.

Ask yourself, Are you using Facebook or are you being abused by it?

Whether Facebook is your friend or foe, it depends on how you use one of the most powerful gifts from our Creator – choice.

Bear in mind – choices have consequences.

You can choose to control Facebook or let Facebook control you.

Facebook can be your servant or your master.

The outcome is entirely up to you, and you have to decide on the outcome every time you log into Facebook.

Remember, for whatever you accept into your life, if you cannot control it, it will eventually control you or start to control you.

In my humble opinion, you can be an addict to any substance.

You can also be addicted to any activity by design and habit.

Anything can become a driver, a drug, an ego trip, a corrupting influence, or an overwhelming power.

Every use can become an abuse.

Beware.

Your brain can tell you that nothing can control or abuse you, or it will never happen to somebody like you.

That’s why no smoker at the beginning would tell you that he/she would ever become a chain smoker.

Similarly, an alcoholic who doesn’t believe and are willing to admit he/she is an alcoholic will ever be able to cure himself/herself.

Through my study and observation of all kinds of addiction, I have formulated a series of tests to determine if you are addicted or can be addicted to Facebook.

If your mind is preoccupied with Facebook and you spend more time on it than is necessary, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you cannot stop yourself from using Facebook at will and at any point in time, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you cannot be truthful to others about time spent on Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you spend time on Facebook at the expense of doing something more important and living a better lifestyle, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you spend more and more time on Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you feel uncomfortable or even irritated when you stop using Facebook or endeavour to stop using it, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you use Facebook to escape from problems and challenges in your life or to improve your mood, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have made repeated attempts to control, cut back, or stop the use of Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have done something wrong in the process of using Facebook and you do not correct it or correct it adequately, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have jeopardized or lost a significant relationship, job, project or opportunity because of using Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have not plan a schedule for the use of Facebook and implement it effectively, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

The best way to determine if you are addicted to Facebook is to shut it down and stop using it for a period of time.

Who knows, you may be glad you’ve got your life back. 🙂

In any case, it’s good to fast from Facebook every now and then so as to face our Creator and face your true self – and to do it without any distraction.

When your mind is clear about how to live your life effectively, such clarity will bring power.

Such power is needed to control the use of Facebook and other areas of your life.

You can never get older in the past or younger in the future.

Do not waste your life at this moment or any other moment on earth.

May the social media force be with you and not be against you.

I trust that Facebook can be a platform to help you craft in print or in your mind the best book about your life.

Go4It!

Creating Wealth is a Team Sport

Creating Wealth is a Team Sport

There was one moment that will always be etched in my mind.

A large boardroom.

Lots of files and documents on the table.

Around the table were some of the smartest professionals in the business world.

There was total silence.

All eyes were on me.

We had put in more than 12 months of hard work to prepare for our company’s listing on the securities exchange.

All the grounds have been covered.

Changes and improvements were made.

There was nothing else – at least in our minds – that needed to be done.

We had filed our application to the relevant authorities and regulators.

We were waiting for the “Committee” of the securities exchange to deliberate over our application.

We had expected them to give us the final approval that fateful day.

I had planned to take a holiday break the next day. I needed to release the stress and strains that have been accumulated for a long time.

I wanted to recharge myself.

I aimed to come back and create the best future for my company and myself.

Our banker stepped into the room with a surprising announcement.

“The ‘Committee’ cannot come to a decision. They will review it again tomorrow.”

If hearts falling to the ground can be heard, there would be a loud thud.

After a moment of uncomfortable silence, I told everybody, “Let’s go home. We have had a very long day. There’s nothing much we can do right now.”

That evening, I spent the time going through my life.

I started to review myself, “Did I do something wrong?”

“Is there something about me that has caused the delay or worst, rejection?”

I searched my heart and went through almost every area of my life.

My past floated through my mind.

I also thought about my present and future.

In case you need to know, my worries were unnecessary.

On the very next day, almost right from the start of the working day, we were told that our company has been approved to become a public-listed company.

When I reflected on this and other similar experiences, I realized that wealth-creation, like many important aspects of life, is a team sports.

All great businesses depend on great leaders and teamwork.

Ultimately, it’s the people in your business that makes your business works.

To succeed, there are eight critical success factors that should and must be learned, developed, and practised to build a great organization.

These eight factors should be executed by not only the leader but also every member of the team.

1. Cause

Every key stakeholder, including your employee knows that he has only one short life to live.

There’s no dress rehearsal and no way to repeat a live performance in the drama of life.

Therefore, he wants to make full use of his life and live for a compelling purpose.

In the process of running a business, give your people an electrifying cause to live for throughout their lives.

The more electrifying the cause, the more they will devote their heart, mind, and soul to fulfill the cause.

To do so, your business should exist for a purpose that’s meaningful, significant and impactful.

When you communicate the purpose of your business, your message should not only appeal to the mind.

It should also be heart-moving and gut-stirring to gain buy-in, support, and active participation from targeted stakeholders.

To help you design an electrifying cause, ask yourself:

How is your business helping to improve the lives of your colleagues and customers?

How is it making the community, country and other countries a better place?

As you craft and continue to improve the purpose of your business, how can you leave a sustainable legacy and change the world for good?

2. Culture

Many businesses fail not because they are unprofitable but because their key stakeholders have lost faith in their businesses, their leaders and teams.

That is why you should decide, right from the beginning, to set a high standard of morality, ethos, and honour.

If your people don’t know what you live for, believe in, and want to achieve, they won’t follow you.

To develop a strong culture, ask yourself:

How can you develop a mission, vision, and set of values that will unite your people and win their hearts and minds?

How can you inspire them and fire them up to achieve desired dreams and goals?

How can you continue to improve their performance and productivity so as to achieve the best outcomes?

How can you help them focus on achieving sustainable results and do the first things first?

How can you help them develop the personality, responsibility, capacity, capability, creativity, agility, adaptability and tenacity to achieve success?

How can you help them redesign, re-skill and reinvent themselves to achieve not just incremental but also quantum leaps of results?

3. Champions

What is a successful organization?

In a nutshell, it’s a “leaders build leaders who will go on building even more and better leaders” movement.

As a leader, you must build leaders who can build other leaders.

The more and better quality of leaders you have, the stronger your organization will become and the better your overall results.

Just as importantly, you should also learn how to be an outstanding follower.

One of the highest achievements as a leader is to be a servant-leader – one who leads by loving and serving others.

To help you build an organization of champions, ask yourself:

How can you attract talents and convince them to be part of your organization?

How can you earn their trust so that they will help to fulfill a worthwhile cause?

How can you earn their respect so that they’ll continue to put in their optimal time, effort, and other resources to achieve desired results?

How can you love them so that they’ll be loyal to you and will stand and fight with you to fulfill the targeted dreams?

4. Coaching

To build a great business, you should invest in every key stakeholder.

When you invest in human lives, you’ll live a great life.

Aim to help your key stakeholders expand their potential, enhance their performance, and continue to excel and reach the highest level of achievement and fulfillment.

To do that, you should practise what I call an “I Do, We Do, You Do” system.

You are the ultimate model for your key stakeholders.

First, show them the way. Then work with your leaders to achieve the best results.

Finally, ensure they can do it on their own.

To continue to achieve better results, you need to grow and help them grow.

And ensure that they’ll continue to grow even if you’re not with them.

When your key stakeholders feel that their lives have been transformed for good, they will be more grateful and loyal to you.

Over time, they will go from being dependent on you to becoming independent.

Ultimately, your people will develop an interdependent relationship and work together to collaborate and co-create better solutions.

To help your people learn, improve and achieve better results, ask yourself:

How can you strengthen self-learning and turn your organization into a learning organization?

How can you help your people continue to change, improve and persevere to achieve better results?

How can you help them find joy, satisfaction and fulfillment in learning?

How can you help them to help themselves so as to continue to learn and take themselves to a higher level?

5. Community

Everybody wants to belong to a community of caring friends – a community that bonds closer than a family.

Nobody abandons a positive friend and community.

Therefore, immerse your team in love.

Love is the most powerful force in the workplace and in life.

When you have to speak, ensure that your words will only be words of life.
Words that will lift up your key stakeholders and together with them, build up a loving community of friends.

Develop the foundation of your business to deliver positive service, advantage, and growth.

Turn your organisation into a wise, loving, and respectable family.

To help you build up a community of caring friends, ask yourself:

How can you inject more fun, excitement and dynamism into the organization?

How can you continue to motivate and inspire your people?

How can you love your people and create magical moments for them so as to build up a treasure trove of beautiful memories?

6. Challenge

Every key stakeholder wants to be challenged to do well and to do good.

If motivated correctly, they can rise up to achieve a higher level of results and fulfillment.

As a leader, you need to spend time to understand your leaders.

Find out their unique needs and expectations.

Craft worthwhile goals and dreams to help them live a meaningful, dynamic and fulfilling life.

Be a partner in helping your key stakeholders achieve a worthwhile calling in life.

7. Care and Concern

Your people are not interested in what you know and do, but how much you care for and care about them.

As a leader, if you don’t have a heart to love and serve your people, you don’t deserve and qualify to be their leader.

According to Abraham Maslow, the highest level of needs is not self-actualisation but self-transcendence.

In other words, as a leader, learn to live beyond yourself to help others live a better life. Serve a higher purpose in making our world a better home.

The more you reach out to bless other lives, the richer and better your life will become.

8. Cohesion

A great team is a team that learns how to cooperate, collaborate and co-create solutions together.

There are five key dimensions to help you build such an effective teamwork.

a. T – Team
Many people use the acronym – TEAM, to stand for “Together Everybody Achieve More”.

It should stand for “Teams that are Effective Achieve More”.

Teamwork starts with the people in your team. It is the people in your team that ultimately makes the team work.

To develop an effective team, you need to seek out the right talent to do the right job and at the right time.

The emphasis is on seeking the right talent – and not the best talent.

The best talent may not fit well with the job and the team.

However, the right talent with the right Knowledge, Attitude, Skill and Habits (KASH) can help you achieve a more sustainable success.

After choosing the right talents, you need to ensure that they are equipped and empowered to perform their roles and responsibilities.

You need to help them learn continuously so that they can get better results.

b. E – End Point

In my company, we have a saying that “result is the only true measurement of work and life”.

As a leader, you need to first determine the win-win results that you wish to achieve for your team and team mates.

In addition, you need to subordinate your personal interests to the interests of the team and organization.

It begins with an actionable plan for achieving the results and results define the effectiveness of a team.

In this regard, it is important to note that if you walk on the same pathway, you will reach the same destination.

To improve the destination, you need to find or create a better pathway to it. In other words, to get better results, you must redesign your organisational structure, system, and process.

You must commit to a process of continuous and never-ending innovation, improvement and growth.

c. A – Alignment
To ensure that the team reaches the end point productively, every member must support and be aligned to the team’s philosophy.

It includes the team’s mission, vision, values, and operations.

The team must be committed to adopt effective formal and informal communications to ensure that its members are working efficiently towards the desired objectives.

d. M – Motivation

As a servant-leader, you must always remember that every member in your team is a unique individual with gifts and talents.

Your team members have their own needs, fears and aspirations.

Your job is to empathize with them in order to bring out the best from them and to help them enjoy the best of life.

To do that, you need to constantly inspire and motivate them to love their duties and to do them to the best of their abilities.

You need to work closely with them to help them find meaning, excitement and fulfillment in their work.

It bodes well to remember that if you don’t have a heart to love and serve your team members, you do not qualify and deserve to be a leader.

e. S – System
To ensure that you have the most effective team, the team members must not only be in alignment and be totally motivated, there must also be systems in place to help lead and manage them.

The quality of your systems will determine the quality of your team.

It will also determine your team’s speed of growth and achievements.

Think: How can you creatively redesign your team’s model of operation so as to achieve a higher level of success?

If you and your business adopt and adhere to these eight factors, you’ll build a more stable, secure and sustainable business.

Working Hard And Smart

Working Hard And Smart

One of the first self-help books that was written way back in the 1800s is titled… (drum roll please)… “Self-Help”.

It was written by Samuel Smiles, a government reformer in Britain.

Like most self-help books, Self-Help is laden with rags-to-riches stories.

According to Smiles, those go-getters and achievers had a common quality.

Guess what it is?

It is…Hard work.

In the book, Smiles extol the virtues of good work, ethos and diligence.

He adviced everybody who wanted to be successful to rise early, keep your head down, and work hard.

Many have said that it is better to work smart than to work hard.

I don’t disagree but I submit to you that you need to work hard even if you work smart.

And by working hard, you put yourself in a better position to learn how to work smart.

If you feel like working hard and smart, do more.

If not, push yourself even harder until working hard and smart becomes a habit and a way of life.

Soon, you will learn to enjoy your work and become more effective and efficient in your performance, and in directing your life towards the desired destination.

Along the way, don’t let anything hold you back from working hard and smart.

Fight all odds with all your might.

Fire up your engines to get out of bed to start a new day and to start it right.

Press on and keep pressing on to take the right action, and take the right action in the right way.

Keep striving and stretching and soaring to accomplish better achievements that will help you reach for the stars in your life.

I believe if you stop working hard and smart, you stop living meaningfully.

Taking responsibility to face challenges is our Creator’s mandate for us to manage life.

Therefore, make working hard and smart a vital, integral and fulfilling part of your life – starting from now.

Question: Why do you think it is important for you to work hard?

10-Fold Path To Becoming Rich And Wealthy

10-Fold Path To Becoming Rich And Wealthy

In my study of rich and wealthy people, I discovered that every one of them has initially adopted a preferred path to success.

There are generally ten major pathways.

I call them the 10-Fold Path to becoming rich and wealthy.

By understanding different pathways, it will help you find the appropriate path of least resistance to wealth.

It will also help you establish individual and organisational capacity and competence to develop different pathways to acquire financial success.

These pathways can be somewhat correlated to psychological models such as the Five Factor Model (FFM).

The FFM covers the big five personality traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism or emotional stability (OCEAN). It accounts for different personality traits and they have been perceived to be connected to specific parts of the brain.

If you study Greek mythology, you will realise that the ten different pathways have been depicted in the lives of mythological gods and goddess.

It goes to prove that discoveries of modern age have been in existence since the beginning of time.

We have merely affirmed truths of age-old wisdom.

In a nut shell, let me share with you the 10-Fold Path to becoming rich and wealthy.

1. Openness

1.1 Game-Changer (“Aphrodite”)

The Game-Changer becomes rich by identifying problems, finding gaps, and applying radical and disruptive solutions in the marketplace.

Eg. Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos

1.2 Inventor (“Hephaestus”)

The Inventor becomes rich by creating and innovating new models, products and services.

Eg. Steve Jobs, Richard Branson

2. Conscientiousness

2.1 Governor (“Athena”)

The Governor becomes rich through leading people and managing limited resources. He develops structure, system and process to make things work and to create wealth.

Eg. Steve Ballmer, Jack Welch

2.2 Guardian (“Demeter”)

The Guardian becomes rich through acquiring undervalued assets and improving, leveraging upon, and growing these assets.

Eg. Warren Buffet, Amancio Ortega, Sheldon Adelson, Lakshmi Mittal, Paul Allen

3. Extraversion

3.1 Power Broker (“Hermes”)

The Power Broker becomes rich by selling, trading and brokering information and deals.

Eg. Carl Icahn, George Soros, Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump

3.2 Ruler (“Zeus”)

The Ruler becomes rich by targeting a market segment or niche. He then works on developing an unfair advantage or a winning edge to dominate the segment or niche.

Eg. Harry Triguboff, Eike Fuhrken Batista, Li Ka-shing, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Walton, Aliko

4. Agreeableness

4.1 Hero (“Apollo”)

The Hero becomes rich through making people like, trust and respect him.

Eg. Oprah Winfey, Michael Jackson, David Beckham

4.2 Master (“Poseidon”)

The Master becomes rich by being an acclaimed expert in a significant domain.

Eg. George Lucas, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, J. K. Rowling,

5. Neuroticism or emotional stability

5.1 Problem-Solver (“Artemis”)

The Problem-Solver becomes rich by resolving problems that can cause major gains or losses to the customers.

Eg. Charles Schwab, Michael Dell

5.2 Politician (“Ares”)

The important lessons to bear in mind for an entrepreneur are as follows:

1. Leverage on your strengths

There is no single and absolute path to be rich and wealthy.

As a start, you need to choose the path that is most appropriate to you, and one that will optimize your edge, advantage and growth.

The choice of the path depends on the following:

1.1 Purpose. It serves your purpose in starting a business.

1.2 Personality. It leverages on the strengths of your personality.

1.3 Passion. It should invoke meaning, fun and excitement.

1.4 Performance. It should be a path that can help you perform well and better than your targeted competitors.

It plays to your advantage because you have an edge or you CAN have an edge in terms of your knowledge, attitude, skills, habits (KASH).

1.5 Priority. It should be a path that is relevant and significant at this time and in your current situation.

2. Cover your weaknesses.

You need to retain different talents to cover your weaknesses. In addition, you need to build structure, system and processes to secure and enhance your business model and operation.

3. Work towards a holistic model of growth.

As you work on your chosen path, learn to develop a targeted, holistic and balanced set of competences so that you can choose different and perhaps more effective options to grow your business.

Develop qualities of adaptability, agility and tenacity for both yourself and your team.

In that way, you can survive any turbulence and exploit the silver lining in every storm.

May the right path be with you.
