Dancing With Life

Dancing With Life

Our Creator has created you as a unique and valued person.

Blessed you with a set of strengths, gifts, and talents.

There is not a single person that has your set of knowledge, skills, and resources. Think, feel, talk, and act like you.

No one has felt your grief, pain, and sorrow. Or carry your passion, dream and aspiration.

Nobody has ever walked your steps and gone through your experiences.

Who you are, what you have gone through, and what you can achieve can be your greatest asset.

Make you a stronger and better person.

And help you connect with more people and influence their future.

Looking forward, you can continue to strengthen your capacity and capability.

Improve your life on an ongoing basis.

Always remember that your life is not your own.

You have no control over its expiry date.

Therefore, if you woke up alive this morning, be thankful.

Be mindful to enjoy the beauty within and around you.

In doing so, your spirit will be lifted up with a heart of gratitude.

You have been given life as a gift and a means to be a blessing to the people and environment around you.

A new lease of life is given to you again and again because there is a special mission for you.

A dream waiting to be fulfilled.

Someone is waiting for you to free him from an emotional prison.

Many lives can be touched by you.

Like a pupa, a beautiful butterfly is waiting to be released from the cocoon of your experiences.

Therefore, live up to a higher calling and serve a worthier cause.

The best way to live your life is to live your life for others.

The more you reach out to bless others, the richer and better your life will become.

Our Creator has not given up on you and He will never give up on you.

Therefore, never ever give up on yourself. You are a work in progress.

It’s time to act.

It’s time to claim your destiny.

It’s time to rise to greatness.

Go4It!

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

Beware of Facebook.

Beware of Facebook.

Facebook has an unbelievable power to engage you over a protracted period of time.

It can sometimes make you scroll mindlessly and meaninglessly through post after post, click “Like” after “Like” on a growing number of its pages.

(Please don’t leave my Love Note now.) 🙂

Over time, Facebook can influence you far more than you can ever know or imagine.

Ask yourself, Are you using Facebook or are you being abused by it?

Whether Facebook is your friend or foe, it depends on how you use one of the most powerful gifts from our Creator – choice.

Bear in mind – choices have consequences.

You can choose to control Facebook or let Facebook control you.

Facebook can be your servant or your master.

The outcome is entirely up to you and you have to decide on the outcome every time you log into Facebook.

Remember, for whatever you accept into your life, if you cannot control it, it will eventually control you or start to control you.

In my humble opinion, you can be an addict to any substance.

You can also be addicted to any activity by design and habit.

Anything can become a driver, a drug, an ego trip, a corrupting influence, or an overwhelming power.

Everything can be used to become demonic.

Beware.

Your brain can tell you it’s not possible or it will never happen to you.

That’s why no smoker at the beginning will tell you that he/she will ever become a chain smoker.

Similarly, an alcoholic who doesn’t believe and admit he/she is an alcoholic will never be able to cure himself/herself.

Through my study and observation of all kinds of addiction, I have formulated a series of tests to determine if you are or can be addicted to Facebook.

If your mind is preoccupied with Facebook and you spend more time on it than is necessary, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you cannot stop yourself from using Facebook at will and at any point in time, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you cannot be truthful to others about time spent on Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you spend time on Facebook at the expense of doing something more important and living a better lifestyle, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you spend more and more time on Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you feel uncomfortable or even irritated when you stop using Facebook or endeavour to stop using it, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you use Facebook to escape from problems and challenges in your life or to improve your mood, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have made repeated attempts to control, cut back, or stop the use of Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have done something wrong in the process of using Facebook and you do not correct it or correct it adequately, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have jeopardized or lost a significant relationship, job, project or opportunity because of using Facebook, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

If you have not plan a schedule for the use of Facebook and implement it effectively, you are addicted or on the way to become addicted to it.

The best way to determine if you are addicted to Facebook is to shut it down and stop using it for a period of time.

Who knows, you may be glad you’ve got your life back. 🙂

In any case, it’s good to fast from Facebook every now and then so as to face our Creator and face your true self – and to do it without any distraction.

When your mind is clear about how to live your life effectively, such clarity will bring power.

Such power is needed to control the use of Facebook and other areas of your life.

You can never get older in the past or younger in the future.

Do not waste your life at this moment or any other moment on earth.

May the social media force be with you and not against you.

I trust Facebook will help you craft in print or in your mind the best book about your life.

Go4It!

I hope this message will find a place in your heart.

Creating Wealth is a Team Sport

Creating Wealth is a Team Sport

There was one moment that will always be etched in my mind.

A large boardroom. Lots of files and documents on the table.

Around the table were some of the smartest professionals in the business world.

There was total silence. All eyes were on me.

We had put in more than 12 months of hard work to prepare for our company’s listing on the securities exchange.

All the grounds have been covered. Changes and improvements were made.

There was nothing else – at least in our minds – that needed to be done. We had filed our application to the relevant authorities and regulators.

We were waiting for the “Committee” of the securities exchange to deliberate over our application.

We had expected them to give us the final approval that fateful day.

I had planned to take a holiday break the next day. I needed to release the stress and strains that have been accumulated for a long time.

I wanted to recharge myself.

I aimed to come back and create the best future for my company and myself.

Our banker stepped into the room with a surprising announcement.

“The ‘Committee’ cannot come to a decision. They will review it again tomorrow.”

If hearts falling to the ground can be heard, there would be a loud thud.

After a moment of uncomfortable silence, I told everybody, “Let’s go home. We have had a very long day. There’s nothing much we can do right now.”

That evening, I spent the time going through my life.

I started to review myself, “Did I do something wrong?”

“Is there something about me that has caused the delay or worst, rejection?”

I searched my heart and went through almost every area of my life.

My past floated through my mind. I also thought about my present and future.

In case you need to know, my worries were unnecessary.

On the very next day, almost right from the start of the working day, we were told that our company has been approved to become a public-listed company.

When I reflected on this and other similar experiences, I realized that wealth-creation, like many important aspects of life, is a team sports.

All great businesses depend on great leaders and teamwork.

Ultimately, it’s the people in your business that makes your business works.

To succeed, there are eight critical success factors that should and must be learned, developed, and practised to build a great organization.

These eight factors should be executed by not only the leader but also every member of the team.

1. Cause

Every key stakeholder, including your employee knows that he has only one short life to live.

There’s no dress rehearsal and no way to repeat a live performance in the drama of life.

Therefore, he wants to make full use of his life and live for a compelling purpose.

In the process of running a business, give your people
an electrifying cause to live for throughout their lives.

The more electrifying the cause, the more they will
devote their heart, mind, and soul to fulfill the cause.

To do so, your business should exist for a purpose
that’s meaningful, significant and impactful.

When you communicate the purpose of your business, your message should not only appeal to the mind.

It should also be heart-moving and gut-stirring to gain buy-in, support, and active participation from targeted stakeholders.

To help you design an electrifying cause, ask yourself:

How is your business helping to improve the lives of your colleagues and customers?

How is it making the community, country and other countries a better place?

As you craft and continue to improve the purpose of your business, how can you leave a sustainable legacy and change the world for good?

2. Culture

Many businesses fail not because they are unprofitable but because their key stakeholders have lost faith in their businesses, their leaders and teams.

That is why you should decide, right from the beginning, to set a high standard of morality, ethos, and honour.

If your people don’t know what you live for, believe in,
and want to achieve, they won’t follow you.

To develop a strong culture, ask yourself:

How can you develop a mission, vision, and set of values that will unite your people and win their hearts and minds?

How can you inspire them and fire them up to achieve desired dreams and goals?

How can you continue to improve their performance and productivity so as to achieve the best outcomes?

How can you help them focus on achieving sustainable results and do the first things first?

How can you help them develop the personality, responsibility, capacity, capability, creativity, agility, adaptability and tenacity to achieve success?

How can you help them redesign, re-skill and reinvent themselves to achieve not just incremental but also quantum leaps of results?

3. Champions

What is a successful organization?

In a nutshell, it’s a “leaders build leaders who will go on
building even more and better leaders” movement.

As a leader, you must build leaders who can build other leaders.

The more and better quality of leaders you have, the stronger your organization will become and the better your overall results.

Just as importantly, you should also learn how to be an outstanding follower.

One of the highest achievements as a leader is to be a servant-leader – one who leads by loving and serving others.

To help you build an organization of champions, ask yourself:

How can you attract talents and convince them to be part of your organization?

How can you earn their trust so that they will help to fulfill a worthwhile cause?

How can you earn their respect so that they’ll continue to put in their optimal time, effort, and other resources to achieve desired results?

How can you love them so that they’ll be loyal to you and will stand and fight with you to fulfill the targeted dreams?

4. Coaching

To build a great business, you should invest in every key stakeholder.

When you invest in human lives, you’ll live a great life.

Aim to help your key stakeholders expand their potential, enhance their performance, and continue to excel and reach the highest level of achievement and fulfillment.

To do that, you should practise what I call an “I Do, We Do, You Do” system.

You are the ultimate model for your key stakeholders.

First, show them the way. Then work with your leaders to achieve the best results.

Finally, ensure they can do it on their own.

To continue to achieve better results, you need to grow and help them grow.

And ensure that they’ll continue to grow even if you’re not with them.

When your key stakeholders feel that their lives have been transformed for good, they will be more grateful and loyal to you.

Over time, they will go from being dependent on you to becoming independent.

Ultimately, your people will develop an interdependent relationship and work together to collaborate and co-create better solutions.

To help your people learn, improve and achieve better results, ask yourself:

How can you strengthen self-learning and turn your organization into a learning organization?

How can you help your people continue to change, improve and persevere to achieve better results?

How can you help them find joy, satisfaction and fulfillment in learning?

How can you help them to help themselves so as to continue to learn and take themselves to a higher level?

5. Community

Everybody wants to belong to a community of caring friends – a community that bonds closer than a family.

Nobody abandons a positive friend and community.

Therefore, immerse your team in love.
Love is the most powerful force in the workplace and in life.

When you have to speak, ensure that your words will only be words of life.

Words that will lift up your key stakeholders and together with them, build up a loving community of friends.

Develop the foundation of your business to deliver positive service, advantage, and growth.

Turn your organisation into a wise, loving, and respectable family.

To help you build up a community of caring friends, ask yourself:

How can you inject more fun, excitement and dynamism into the organization?

How can you continue to motivate and inspire your people?

How can you love your people and create magical moments for them so as to build up a treasure trove of beautiful memories?

6. Challenge

Every key stakeholder wants to be challenged
to do well and to do good.

If motivated correctly, they can rise up
to achieve a higher level of results and fulfillment.

As a leader, you need to spend time to understand your leaders.

Find out their unique needs and expectations.

Craft worthwhile goals and dreams to help them live a meaningful, dynamic and fulfilling life.

Be a partner in helping your key stakeholders achieve a worthwhile calling in life.

7. Care and Concern

Your people are not interested in what you know and do,
but how much you care for and care about them.

As a leader, if you don’t have a heart to love and serve your people,
you don’t deserve and qualify to be their leader.

According to Abraham Maslow, the highest level of needs is not self-actualisation but self-transcendence.

In other words, as a leader, learn to live beyond yourself to help others live a better life. Serve a higher purpose in making our world a better home.

The more you reach out to bless other lives, the richer and better your life will become.

8. Cohesion

A great team is a team that learns how to cooperate, collaborate and co-create solutions together.

There are five key dimensions to help you build such an effective teamwork.

a. T – Team

Many people use the acronym – TEAM, to stand for
“Together Everybody Achieve More”.

It should stand for
“Teams that are Effective Achieve More”.

Teamwork starts with the people in your team. It is the people in your team that ultimately makes the team work.

To develop an effective team, you need to seek out the right talent to do the right job and at the right time.

The emphasis is on seeking the right talent – and not the best talent.

The best talent may not fit well with the job and the team.

However, the right talent with the right Knowledge, Attitude, Skill and Habits (KASH) can help you achieve a more sustainable success.

After choosing the right talents, you need to ensure that they are equipped and empowered to perform their roles and responsibilities.

You need to help them learn continuously so that they can get better results.

b. E – End Point

In my company, we have a saying that “result is the only true measurement of work and life”.

As a leader, you need to first determine the win-win results that you wish to achieve for your team and team mates.

In addition, you need to subordinate your personal interests to the interests of the team and organization.

It begins with an actionable plan for achieving the results and results define the effectiveness of a team.

In this regard, it is important to note that if you walk on the same pathway, you will reach the same destination.

To improve the destination, you need to find or create a better pathway to it. In other words, to get better results, you must redesign your organisational structure, system, and process.

You must commit to a process of continuous and never-ending innovation, improvement and growth.

c. A – Alignment

To ensure that the team reaches the end point productively, every member must support and be aligned to the team’s philosophy.

It includes the team’s mission, vision, values, and operations.

The team must be committed to adopt effective formal and informal communications to ensure that its members are working efficiently towards the desired objectives.

d. M – Motivation

As a servant-leader, you must always remember that every member
in your team is a unique individual with gifts and talents.

Your team members have their own needs, fears and aspirations.

Your job is to empathize with them in order to bring out the
best from them and to help them enjoy the best of life.

To do that, you need to constantly inspire and motivate them to love their duties and to do them to the best of their abilities.

You need to work closely with them to help them find meaning, excitement and fulfillment in their work.

It bodes well to remember that if you don’t have a heart to love and serve your team members, you do not qualify and deserve to be a leader.

e. S – System

To ensure that you have the most effective team, the team members must not only be in alignment and be totally motivated, there must also be systems in place to help lead and manage them.

The quality of your systems will determine the quality of your team.

It will also determine your team’s speed of growth and achievements.

Think: How can you creatively redesign your team’s model of operation so as to achieve a higher level of success?

If you and your business adopt and adhere to these eight factors, you’ll build a more stable, secure and sustainable business.

Working Hard And Smart

Working Hard And Smart

One of the first self-help books written way back in the 1800s is titled… (drum roll please)… “Self-Help”.

It was written by Samuel Smiles, a government reformer in Britain.

Like most self-help books, Self-Help is laden with rags-to-riches stories.

According to Smiles, those go-getters and achievers had a common quality.

Guess what it is?

It is…Hard work.

In the book, Smiles extol the virtues of good work, ethics and diligence.

He adviced everybody who wanted to be successful to rise early, keep your head down, and work hard.

Many have said that it is better to work smart than to work hard.

I don’t disagree but I submit to you that you need to work hard even if you work smart.

And by working hard, you put yourself in a better position to learn how to work smart.

If you feel like working hard and smart, do more.

If not, push yourself even harder until working hard and smart becomes a habit and a way of life.

Soon, you will learn to enjoy your work and become more effective and efficient in your performance.

And to direct your life towards the desired destination.

Along the way, don’t let anything hold you back from working hard and smart. Fight it with all your might.

Learn to fire up your engines when you get out of bed to start a new day and to start it right.

Press on and keep pressing on to take the right action and in the right way.

Keep striving and stretching and soaring to accomplish better achievements that will help you reach for the stars in your life.

I believe if you stop working hard and smart, you stop living meaningfully.

Taking responsibility to face challenges is our Creator’s mandate for us to manage life.

Therefore, make working hard and smart a vital, integral and fulfilling part of your life – starting from now.

Why is it important for you to work hard?

10-Fold Path to Creating Wealth

10-Fold Path to Creating Wealth

In my study of rich and wealthy people, I discovered that every one of them has initially adopted a preferred path to success.

There are generally ten major pathways.

I call them the 10-Fold Path to becoming rich and wealthy.

By understanding different pathways, it will help you find the appropriate path of least resistance to wealth.

It will also help you establish individual and organisational capacity and competence to develop different pathways to acquire financial success.

These pathways can be correlated to psychological models such as the Five-Factor Model (FFM).

The FFM covers the big five personality traits of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism or emotional stability (OCEAN).

It accounts for different traits in personality and they are deemed to be connected to specific parts of the brain.

If you study Greek mythology, you will realise that the ten different pathways have been depicted in the lives of mythological gods and goddess.

It goes to prove that discoveries of modern age have been in existence since the beginning of time. We have merely affirmed truths of age-old wisdom.

In a nutshell, let me share with you the 10-Fold Path to becoming rich and wealthy.

Openness

1. Game-changer (“Aphrodite”)

The Game-changer becomes rich by identifying problems, finding gaps, and applying radical and disruptive solutions in the marketplace.

Eg. Michael Bloomberg, Jeff Bezos.

2. Inventor (“Hephaestus”)

The Inventor becomes rich by creating and innovating new models, products and services.

Eg. Steve Jobs, Richard Branson.

Conscientiousness

3. Governor (“Athena”)

The Governor becomes rich through leading people and managing limited resources.

He develops structure, system and process to make things work and create wealth.

Eg. Steve Ballmer, Jack Welch.

4. Guardian (“Demeter”)

The Guardian becomes rich through acquiring undervalued assets and improving, leveraging on, and growing them.

Eg. Warren Buffet, Amancio Ortega, Sheldon Adelson, Lakshmi Mittal, Paul Allen.

Extraversion

5. Power Broker (“Hermes”)

The Power Broker becomes rich by selling, trading and brokering information and deals.

Eg. Carl Icahn, George Soros, Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump.

6. Ruler (“Zeus”)

The Ruler becomes rich by targeting a market segment or niche.

He then works on developing an unfair advantage or winning edge to dominate it.

Eg. Harry Triguboff, Eike Fuhrken Batista, Li Ka-shing, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Walton, Aliko Dangote.

Agreeableness

7. Hero (“Apollo”)

The Hero becomes rich through making people like, trust and respect him.

Eg. Oprah Winfey, Michael Jackson, David Beckham.

8. Master (“Poseidon”)

The Master becomes rich by being an acclaimed expert in a significant domain.

Eg. George Lucas, Giorgio Armani, Ralph Lauren, J. K. Rowling.

Neuroticism or emotional stability

9. Problem-Solver (“Artemis”)

The Problem-solver becomes rich by resolving problems that can cause major gains or losses to the customers.

Eg. Charles Schwab, Michael Dell.

10. Politician (“Ares”)

The Politician becomes rich by developing schemes and maneuvers to influence operations in organisations, communities, and society.

He does it mainly for his personal or partisan advantage.

Eg. Silvia Berlusconi, Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Thaksin Shinawatra, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin.

Entrepreneur’s Perspective

The important lessons to bear in mind for an entrepreneur are as follows:

1. Know thyself

You need to know yourself and trust your intuition and emotion before you can decide on the most appropriate path for yourself.

In addition, you need to invest time and energy to develop your chosen path before it can deliver the desired results.

You need to believe in the tremendous potentials and capabilities that our Creator has endowed you with.

You can create your own path to financial success.

2. Leverage on your strengths

There is no single and absolute path to be rich and wealthy.

As a start, you need to choose the path that is most appropriate to you, one that will optimize your edge, advantage and growth.

The choice of the path depends on the following:

a. Purpose. It serves your purpose in starting a business.

b. Personality. It leverages on the strengths of your personality.

c. Passion. It should invoke meaning, fun and excitement.

d. Performance. It should be a path that can help you perform well and better than your targeted competitors.

It plays to your advantage because you have an edge or you CAN have an edge in terms of your knowledge, attitude, skills and habits (KASH).

e. Priority. It should be a path that is relevant and significant at this time and in your current situation.

3. Cover your weaknesses

You need to retain different talents to cover your weaknesses.

In addition, you need to build organisation, system and processes to secure and enhance your business model and operation.

4. Work towards a holistic model of growth

As you work on your chosen path, learn to develop a targeted, holistic and balanced set of competences so that you can choose different and perhaps more effective paths.

You can also have more options to grow your business.

Develop qualities of adaptability, agility and tenacity for both yourself and your team.

In that way, you can survive any turbulence and exploit the silver lining in every storm.

5. Flourish on your chosen path

As a rule of thumb, be the best in your chosen path and stick with it. Learn to enjoy the journey and continue to improve yourself.

May the right path be with you.

Go4It!

Dancing With Life

Dancing With Life

The morning breaks
With the sun’s warm glow
That kisses your cheeks
And paints your world mellow

A new life bestowed
A new day borrowed
A blessing worth counting
Until tomorrow

Listen, the rooster crows
Listen, the bird sings
Listen, the wind blows
Listen, the world hears

Tree tops that sway
To the dance of life
Colours so vibrant
They come alive.

Life is a gift
Live it!

Tread upon this earth
With a soul to serve
Walk on in life
With happiness to share.

You are a magnum opus
A great masterpiece
Though rough in the edges now
Perfection is your crown.

Look into the mirror and see
A prince, not a frog
A divine destiny
Live to claim today
The privilege to be
Someone of a worthy calling
Someone the Father wants you to be.

Talents, skills, intelligence and health
Heaven has endowed you with these wealth
Use them to serve and lift another
Use them to make someone
Breathe a little better.

For what is life
If not lived with purpose?
For what use is a light
When in darkness it is hidden?

Wake up, be grateful
Find someone to help today
Cheer up, be of goodwill
Make someone feel glad today.

Tomorrow may be gone
Today may be your last
Life may finally reach
Its expiry date.

So improve yourself,
Reach out
Influence others for good
Live life to the full today.

Developing The “uBuntu” Spirit

Developing The “uBuntu” Spirit

I spent some time during the last two weeks of December 2012 in South Africa and Swaziland.

Before I left for the trip, I made it a point to read up about these countries and especially their way of life.

I found it hard to accept many of their beliefs, customs and practices.

However, they have some philosophies that resonated in my heart and mind.

Let me share one of them with you.

In the locals’ traditional worldview, there is a belief which they termed as ‘uBuntu.’

In essence, they believe that you cannot be a human on your own. It is the people around you that makes you a human.

In other words, you cannot live a good life apart from your community.

You can only achieve your highest fulfillment while working with and serving your community and society.

For example, you cannot be an entrepreneur without customers and other stakeholders. You are also not a leader if you don’t have followers.

In short, you can only live well because others make it possible for you.

On a bigger scale, all humans, regardless of creed, custom, colour, culture, and country of origin belong to the same universal family.

Connected and bonded through an obligation of sharing and a responsibility of giving to one another.

This sense of interdependence build ‘simunye’, a word in Zulu which means solidarity.

Solidarity can help in the betterment of a community.

From the ‘uBuntu’ perspective, even colleagues in the company should be treated as brothers and sisters of the extended family.

Everybody has a responsibilty to look after each other and work effectively together for a greater good.

The workplace belongs indirectly to employees because of its importance in supporting their livelihoods and the vested interests they have for each other.

Therefore, there should be a greater sense of ownership, enthusiasm and loyalty in the company.

There is another ‘uBuntu’ practice which touched me. It does not accept the idea of orphans.

The responsibilty of parenthood does not reside on just the father and mother of a child but on the whole community of adults.

When the natural parents of a child are not around, the fathers and mothers in the community will share to take over their roles and responsibilities.

Ensure that the child is not being abandoned and will provide for his needs and personal development.

I like the ‘eBuntu’ concept of family because it takes on a wider meaning and embodies the spirit of ‘umoja’ (togetherness).

It has the potential to include the people who are around us as well as all of humanity.

There is a Chinese saying, Within the four seas, all men are brothers. (四海之内皆兄弟).

It conveys a similar meaning that all of us are part of the same family. We should look out and care for one another.

If we embrace humanity as family, we will be able to resolve many of the conflicts, controversies and challenges facing humankind.
