Time is created for a purpose.

As I reflect on time, I am mindful that you have a past that you can never change.

However, the past does not have to shape your future.

You can decide to sink or soar as a result of the past.

Our Creator has created time so that you can bury your broken dreams in it.

You can choose to learn from and build on it.

So, why let pain and sorrow weigh on your spirit and become a burden in your life?

Why lay them bare on the journey of life and make them a part of your being?

Why let them become a bondage and be a burden on your heart?

Why let a broken heart and uncompleted files hold you back from the passion of living and your dream?

It’s time to revisit some of these uncompleted stories. Stories that were left hanging at the back of time.

It’s time to craft or re-craft the remaining chapters for a beautiful life.

It’s time to close the files and let a boulder roll off your chest, a burden be released from your heart.

When you let go of the negative emotions and baggages from the past, it will free you to run farther and faster in life.

You will become lighter and your steps, quicker.

Eventually, you will take flight and soar to the stars of your dream.

You can close the files in the past – now.

One of the best ways to be at peace with the past is to resolve old issues and build on the resulting lessons for the best future.

One of the best ways to remove past guilt is to put to right the wrongs that have been committed.

One of the best ways to remove resentment against your offenders is to continue to forgive them.

One of the best ways to clear negative emotions is to learn how to cope with them and replace them with positive emotion.

One of the best ways to remove resentment and hatred is to replace them with love, compassion and kindness.

Leveraging On The Past

When I reflect on challenges of the past, I am mindful they were not random dots in our lives.

They happened for a reason.

There are meaning and significance for every experience even though you might not realise it at that point in time.

Learn to enjoin these unique experiences into an amazing tapestry of purpose, significance, and blessing.

The past will then becomes a working tool for your future.

The past will become a launching pad to help you make full use of your life and live life at its best.

Therefore, accept your past and be contented with it.

Be grateful and thankful for the experiences and lessons from the past.

Learn to fall in love with unique blessing of your past so as to be grateful for the present and to create a brighter future.

When that happens, there will be a greater sense of peace, and pride and joy in your life.

Price Of Peace

(This posting is for people who has been hurt by someone in their life.)

A wounded person cannot enjoy life.

A broken heart cannot fully love.

A crushed spirit cannot live meaningfully.

Long after the transgressor has left you, you continue to bear the hurt and pain.

Paradoxically, you carry the hate and resentment and hope that the transgressor will suffer for them.

Truth is – you suffer. They don’t.

The only solution – forgiveness.

Through forgiveness, many of your psychological and emotional issues can be resolved.

Forgiveness is not an intellectual exercise.

Forgiveness comes from the heart and not from the mind.

That’s why, forgiveness is for the brave and not for the weak.

Forgiveness is the way of winners, not drifters.

Forgiveness ensures that you do not allow the transgressor to continue to hurt you.

Forgiveness empowers you to move on and not return to the past that you want to leave behind.

Forgiveness frees up room in your heart and mind for love, for the best of life, and for personal fulfillment.

Forgiveness lifts you to live at a higher plane of life.

My friend, will you forgive and forgive again and again for the sake of lasting peace?

Children Taught Me 10 Secrets Of Happiness.

Children can teach you many powerful lessons to be a happier person.

Let me share ten of these lessons with you.

1. Choose To Be Happy.

Happiness is a choice and a right given to you.

Make the right choice and take the right action from now.Live As Happily As You Want.

2. Live As Happily As You Want.

Every morning when children wake up, they may have to choose between being happy or being unhappy.

They do not choose to be unhappy and carry unhappiness in their minds and behaviors.

Children just move on to live as happily as they can.

Happiness is a matter of choice and change and not a matter of chance or circumstances.Be Happy With Everything Within And Around You.

3. Be Happy With Everything Within And Around You.

Children’s happiness has nothing to do with their feelings.

It has nothing to do with wealth and other possessions.

Children generate happiness with any and everything in their life.

They can be happy in any situation and environment.Be Happy: No Reasons Needed.

4. Be Happy: No Reasons Needed.

If you ask children why they are happy, they may not be able to give you a reason.

Everything inside and around them can make them happy.

If you ask the average adult the same question, they will probably tell you many reasons why they are not happy.

Everything inside and around them can make them unhappy.

Children’s happiness is not dependent on any conditions or circumstances.

For many adults, they are happy “if only…,” or “because…”

Children can teach you that you can be happy. Period.Stop Planting Seeds Of Unhappiness.

5. Stop Planting Seeds Of Unhappiness.

What happened to some of us between childhood and adulthood?

Some people choose to plant seeds of negativity in the gardens of their mind.

They grow fruits of worries, resentment, hatred, vengeance, and all kinds of negative emotions.

They choose to become producers of unhappiness in their mind.

Improve their productivity for unhappiness by thinking more unhappy thoughts.

Tragically, they allow unhappiness to become a part of their thought patterns.

They put on “unhappy sunglasses.” Therefore, everything looks unhappy to them.

Communicate words that attract only unhappiness. Eg. “Why is my life so hard?” “I don’t think it will be a good day today,” etc.

To make matters worse, they keep imagining negative scenarios and visualizing negative outcomes.

Soon, they become addicted to the chemicals in their brains that generate unhappy emotions.

Unhappiness can unfortunately attract more unhappiness.

To be happy, nip unhappiness at its bud.

Children do not chase after unhappiness or allow it to slip into their minds.

Even if unhappiness gets in, it does not take roots and is quickly repelled from their precious minds.Focus On Being Happy And Pursue Things That Makes You Happy.

6. Focus On Being Happy And Pursue Things That Makes You Happy.

Children focus on happiness. It is a way of life.

Children wake up and look forward to life. They are curious, playful, and adventurous.

Pursue anything and everything that make them happy.

They remember many of the sources of happiness and they return back to these sources again and again.

They have no room for any negative emotions.

Never worry over small matters.

In any case, there are no matters that are big enough for them to worry about.

Children also know that worrying will not solve anything.

In other words, there is nothing to worry about.

Just be happy.Live simply.

7. Live simply.

Children live simply.

They have no negative desires or unrealistic expectations.

They do not carry unnecessary baggages with them.

Allow any burdens or blockages to weigh them down.

Children can play with the simplest of things and learn how to have fun with them.

Use their energies to focus on important areas that will give them happiness, excitement and fulfillment.Have Good Friends.

8. Have Good Friends.

Children play wholeheartedly with their friends.

They don’t look purely after their own interests. They learn to look after each other.

Share their happiness and concerns with good friends and lift each other up.

Together with those friends, they look for new experiences, moments of fun, and opportunities for laughter.

Along the way, they learn and grow.

And continue to look forward to a better day.

9. Be Grateful.

Children can be grateful for the simplest of things.

Thankful for the smallest gesture.

If they are not spoilt by adults, they would not be greedy.

They do not pander to have more and more things.

Children are contented with what they have.

In awe and wonder about beauty around them and goodness of life.

These wonderful gifts are everywhere.

Children appreciate them.

They can open their minds and eyes and learn to be grateful and thankful for everything in their lives.

They know that being grateful is a source of happiness.Spread Happiness.

10. Spread Happiness.

Children are inclined to spread happiness most of the time.

They can do it with anything they have and under any circumstances.

Happiness will tend to attract more happiness.

Therefore, make people happy and spread happiness everywhere you go.

Happiness is reliving virtues of childhood.

It is living out childlikeness of happiness.

If you want to be happy – be like a child again.

Question: How can you be happy?

The Day My Company Almost Died…

There was an evening scene that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.

A living room in a resort in Langkawi, Malaysia. Six of us were sitting around a table and we were in a deep discussion.

There were looks of despair, fear and helplessness – three potent emotions that when mixed together would drive anyone down an emotional spiral.

Prior to that moment, I had given everybody an overview of our business’s strategic and financial positions.

The prognosis was not good. In fact, my conclusion was that we had come to the end of the entrepreneurial road.

Some years before that painful evening and during the dot-com boom, we had founded a technology company

At the initial stage, our start-up had big dreams, great potential, and you could say, staggering achievements too.

Within a short period, we had thousands of clients paying us a decent fee. They came from more than ten countries.

That achievement was unprecedented and almost record-breaking.

Most dot-com companies were providing freebies while chasing eye balls. They have also not quite expanded beyond their home and neighbouring countries.

We were certainly on a roll. Nothing seemed to be able to stop our technological juggernaut.

Then came the dot-com crash in 2001. By then, we had many copycats.

Meanwhile, there was a wave of disruptive innovations that turned our “radical innovation” into a normal proposition.

We were facing multiple disruptions on many fronts and throughout the value chain.

There were no more road ahead of us.

We were facing untamed jungles and they were looming over us in a hostile way.

That night, there wasn’t even a single star in sight to guide us forward.

After my short message, there was a deep silence. It was like an avalanche had suddenly hit us and buried us up to our neck with snow.

The initial coldness was gradually biting deeper and deeper into our being.

After what seemed like ages, I finally broke the silence.

“We have no other choices. So far, we have invested more than $4 million of our own savings into the company.

“We can’t go on pouring money into a deep dark well.

“Let’s close the company.”

The proverbial guillotine was released.

In this case, our life was not just taken away in a split of a moment.

It was worse.

We felt like our baby was forcibly taken from us and the sharp blade had cut through our hearts.

After that meeting, you could imagine how all of us had walked out of the door and into the suffocating darkness of the night.

What was more painful was that we were gradually being swallowed by the darkness in our spirit.

The next few days, I was a tormented soul.

I couldn’t get my brain to face my heart or for that matter, any other part of my being.

Shortly after, my team and I made a brave and many would say, an illogical decision.

We decided to fight back.

We believed that we have many more fights left inside us.

We would not run away from disruptive forces. Instead, we would take them by the horns.

We would beat our way through hostile jungles until we can build a bigger and better road to freedom.

Long story short, our company went on to recover our losses. Stopped the bleeding and became one of the most profitable dot-com companies.

In 2005, we became the seventh fastest growing company in the Asia Pacific region according to Deloitte & Touché.

From this and many other experiences, I realized that failures do not have to be millstones around your neck.

They can be stepping stones to help you achieve greater successes.

Through that dark experience, I re-learned one of the critical success factors – Tenacity.

Without tenacity, you can never achieve sustainable success.

Look out for the next posting on tenacity…

Life is FUNtastic!

Fight On!

I want to share with you the longest walk in my life.

It was only a 100-metre walk but in my mind, it had seemed like I’ve walked for ages.

The walk was from a lecture theatre in a university to its student hostel.

Two ladies were walking in front of me and they were in deep discussion.

Every now and then, they would turn around and asked me some difficult questions.

I have never had to think so hard to respond to a question prior to that walk.

The reason is because the outcome of the ladies’ discussion could literally wipe out a good six months of my life.

More seriously, it would add stress and frustration on me and make life really tough.

At that point, I had embarked on completing a terminal degree, or what some would call, the pinnacle of a tertiary education.

It was a lifelong dream to stretch myself and put myself through one of the toughest rigors in the university.

This included conducting primary research and hopefully, contribute to the growing body of knowledge and improve society.

Since young, I have loved to learn but because I came from a very poor family, I had to support myself financially through a series of university programmes and do it on a part-time basis.

For years, I would spend three nights and sometimes, weekends, in classes and usually after a long tiring day or a week of work.

The rest of the free time would mainly be spent in the library, completing assignments, and studying for examinations.

Meanwhile, I had to juggle my passion for learning with growing responsibilities and duties at the workplace.

After completing a bachelor and two master’s degrees, I pursued other studies.

Eventually, I only attended short term seminars and courses.

All this while, I had never forgotten an item on my bucket list and that is to earn a doctorate degree.

As I grew older and immersed myself in other pursuits, it became harder and harder for me to make my educational dream come true.

There were lots of excuses that almost convinced me to put off my aspiration.

Subconsciously, there were also growing doubts about my determination, discipline and diligence.

One fateful day, I was given something which to this day, I couldn’t even remember what it was.

All I remember was the newspaper that was used to wrap that thing.

A relatively small advertisement on the paper caught my eyes and that advertisement never left my mind.

The advertisement seemed to pop out of the newspaper and it was screaming for my attention.

It was an advertisement for less than 20 students to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Southern California (USC).

The course of study was designed for qualified senior executives from different parts of the world.

These students had to go through a series of stringent courseworks at three different campuses in Los Angeles, Doha and Hong Kong and finally, complete a dissertation.

I would have thrown the advertisement away if I had not told my family about it.

Since that day, they reminded me again and again and eventually, drove me nuts about fulfilling a lifelong dream.

At that point, it almost seemed like an impossible dream.

I could not even remember what I ate for lunch the day before, let alone memorize information from textbooks.

Finally, with strong support from my family, I applied and was accepted into the course of study.

At that point, little did I know that I had to invest my total being into one of the toughest challenges in my life’s journey.

Why was it tough?

First, I was one of the oldest students in the cohort and probably in the university.

I had no foundational knowledge about many of the subjects.

In fact, some of the subjects were initially way beyond my understanding and competence.

The focus of my research was in financial intelligence.

Few professors in the school were available to give me expert advice and guidance on the topic.

On top of that, I had started some new businesses and investment ventures.

These ventures took time and attention away from my studies.

I was also busy trying to manage many private affairs.

At the same time, I had to run many other initiatives, including a relatively long list of professional, civic, charity, grassroots, philanthropic and humanitarian initiatives.

In addition to these challenges, it didn’t help me to be constantly reminded that only 1% of students in tertiary level institutions has completed a doctoral degree.

Many doctoral candidates have started on the arduous journey but did not make it to the finishing line.

In the process of doing the course, some of the students from my cohort and other cohorts decided to drop out of the course.

As they were bright students, their withdrawals made me question my own commitment, ability and perseverance.

Some of my friends asked me, “At this stage in your life, does it matter if you have a doctorate degree?

“How does it help you in your business?

“Shouldn’t you focus on more important values and pursuits in life?”

To put it mildly, I was not only struggling in so many different ways throughout my course, I was also well-intendedly discouraged by many people on many occasions.

There were moments when I felt like crying – especially when I was studying alone and in the middle of the night.

Then, I went through one of the biggest shocks and failures in my learning journey.

That was how the story of the walk came into the picture.

The walk was one of the most poignant moments of my doctoral journey.

Prior to the walk, I had already submitted and defended the proposal for my dissertation.

In addition, I had done a fair amount of research and crafted the first three chapters of my dissertation.

By then, I felt like I have climbed a large part of a dark, steep and challenging virgin mountain.

Any student who has gone through the same rocky path would sympathise with me and tell you that it was a highly difficult part of an arduous journey.

Shortly after, I was discussing my dissertation with the Professor who taught me quantitative and qualitative research.

Imagine the shock when she told me that all the while, I had been doing my dissertation wrong!

I had to give up all that I’ve done and start all over again.

Her words made me feel weak and soft all over and dragged me down an emotional abyss.

That was when I got the supervisor of my dissertation to talk to her.

Actually, it was more like arguing with her for my sake.

From a short distance away, I could see the two highly-regarded professors debating my dissertation.

I could not hear the words but I could feel the verbal cut and thrust.

Finally, they both turned to me and said the words that I had been dreading to hear, “Patrick, sorry.

“Your dissertation is wrongly crafted. You have to start all over again.”

I felt like the road beneath me had opened up, plunging me into depths of emotional darkness.

That evening, no matter how I looked at my disqualified dissertation, I couldn’t think of how I could pick up the pieces and start the journey all over again.

I almost put up my hands and surrendered to the bitter winds of disappointment and rejection.

Thankfully, after walking around town like a zombie for a few days, I found the courage and strength to restart the project again.

In the words of the battle cry of the USC, I had to “Fight On!”

After that failure, I went on to battle many other challenges and overcome other failures.

I came very close at different points to mental and emotional exhaustion and collapse.

Thanks to encouragement and support from many people around me, I dug into the reservoir of stamina and pressed on until I completed the race.
I was filled with joy when I received my doctorate degree from the USC on 19 July 2014.

Just as importantly, I’m overjoyed for scoring straight As for my coursework and I am really proud of my final dissertation.

It was also a great honour to be nominated to deliver the student speech at the graduation dinner on 17 July 2015 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.

Looking back on the doctoral journey, I learned and am still learning about one of the most critical factors for achieving sustainable success.

That critical success factor is tenacity.

To be continued…

What’s In A Tie?

Why do I wear a tie at work?

In short, I wear a tie for you.

When I first started working, I used to wear a tie because it was part of my employer’s organizational culture and a norm in our industry.

As I grew older and hopefully wiser, I realized that there are many virtues to wearing a tie.

Before I continue, if you are one of those people that do not believe in wearing a tie, I respect your decision.

I also respect whatever reasons you have for making that decision.

Personally, I wear a tie at work as a mark of respect for the people that I meet.

Looking professional is my way of letting the other party know that I am thankful for the opportunity to meet them.

Therefore, I will take the trouble to dress well and look good for the appointment.

This is to show my desire to win their faith in me.

As a result, I hope they will open up to me and we can engage in a meaningful and fulfilling conversation and relationship.

By putting on a tie, it is also my way of communicating to the other party that I am committed to my work.

I will look into the smallest detail to do a good job.

Run many more positive and extra miles for them.

And do everything possible to earn their trust, friendship, respect, loyalty and affection.

When I show up for a meeting with my team, we aim to be well attired.

We want to demonstrate to the other party that we are professionals.

Being professional is not just about what we do but it is also about how we do what we do, right down to putting on a tie and, if appropriate, a business suit at work.

At the same time, we want them to know we work as a team to serve the other party.

We will help them achieve the best possible outcomes and results.

In our industry, we were arguably the first to set the trend for dressing well and looking good.

We are happy to see that many of our counterparts in the industry have also followed our example.

It is our belief that how we do even the smallest detail will influence how we do everything at work and in our lives.

If we cannot handle the smallest of details, we cannot handle major issues and achievements.

By putting on a tie, we are also psychologically motivating ourselves to be confident and operationally-ready to take massive action for the people and environment around us.

Next time when you see us in a tie, remember we put it on…for you.

Life is FUNtastic!

It’s Time To Love Planet Earth.

The time has come for us to realise that we are co-travelers on the journey of life.

How we enjoy and perform on this journey depends on how we look after the only vehicle that we will ever have, planet Earth.

Think about it, for every hour that we live on the planet, it is an hour that the planet has allowed us to live on it.

We are the custodians and caretakers of the planet for our Creator.

Our relationship with the planet and its environment is a reflection of ourselves and the future.

If we look after it well, we will build a positive environment for us to achieve a brighter future.

We need to breathe the air and be in awe and wonder about the beauty of planet Earth.

And be more appreciative and grateful for its magnificence, the lessons that it’s teaching us, and the way it walks with us in our lifetimes.

When we can immerse in the beauty and wonder of the planet, nobody can take away the beauty and wonder that are within us.

It’s also an act of worship to our Creator.

We have to learn from previous generations on how to do a good job in looking after the planet.

Then, we should teach the generations that come after us on how to do a better job than us.

It is unfortunate that in the name of economic development, we have been destroying the planet.

Our streak of destruction is on a collision path with the planet’s need for survival and sustainability.

We need to reverse the negative tide.

Save the planet because it’s the only planet with sultana biscuit, muah chee, and kopi-o kosong – all my favorite food.

Jokes aside, by the laws of nature, the abuse we hurl at the planet will be returned back to us.

When we destroy our environment, we become like viruses.

The natural immune system of the planet will dispel us from it.

The planet has manifested its hurt and pain and will continue to do so through global warming, tidal waves, earthquakes, and other natural crises.

Yet, we sleep through the signs and signals.

We continue our march down the slippery slope to destruction.

Today, many of us stand – one natural crisis away – from the brink of decimation.

When we continue to destroy the planet, our act of destruction will eventually destroy us.

The planet is must bigger than us.

It has been here long before us and it can exist without us.

Take a leaf from the worst of animals.

They build a home in the jungle and live around it.

They do not destroy the jungle and the environment continues to thrive and flourish long after they are gone. We need to do the same.

Remember, everything that keep us alive and well are taken from the planet.

We owe it a debt of gratitude to protect, improve and sustain it.

Tomorrow, when the sun rises, I pray we will wake up to a new day. A new day of love, hope and optimism.

Our collective conscience must be awakened.

We must stretch out our hands not for more profit or possession but in compassion and cooperation to make our planet a better home.

The power to save and beautify planet earth cannot lie with the government, enterprise, or any other organisation.

It lies in every individual’s hands, including yours and mine.

Go4It!
I hope this message will find a place in your heart.
